Sensitive Teeth: Causes and The Best Treatments

It can be frustrating to live with sensitive teeth. Without feeling or discomfort or irritation, you can’t eat or drink certain foods. The discomfort is severe and abrupt sometimes, and when you eat hot or cold things you feel sensitive. Sensitive teeth might be caused by damaged teeth, and you can get sedation dentistry if you are afraid of dental surgeries. If you have sensitive teeth, we will show you how some relief can be obtained and what causes this problem.

Causes

Everyone might have gradually sensitive teeth.  This generally happens due to eroding of the enamel or the exposure of the roots. We will examine some of the typical causes of tooth sensitivity.

Frequent whitening of teeth: It is usually done to rectify discoloration and removing stains from the teeth to make them smile brighter. However, it might lead to tooth susceptibility if you have too many whitening procedures.  Peroxide when overused, can cause tooth sensitivity, and it is one of the major chemicals used in whitening.

Poor brushing techniques: You end up wearing the enamel when using a toothbrush with hard bristles. This makes the teeth more susceptible and exposed. Most dentists would recommend that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush since it does not wear the enamel and causes more difficulties in the future.

Demineralization: The tooth enamel stays due to some minerals that diminish over time. When the content of the minerals is declining, it is known as demining and makes the teeth more sensitive. Demineralization of enamel also causes infection in the teeth. Keep in mind that it is not a developing tissue that the enamel can be neither regenerated nor repaired. So avoid it.

Deal with sensitive teeth

To minimize sensitivity, use a dental sealant that a dentist puts on your teeth. This is, however, a temporary solution since the shield wears off gradually.

Wear a mouthguard, especially while you sleep at night when you are sensitive to tooth grinding. A personalized mouthguard can help decrease the discomfort of your sensitive teeth and other symptoms such as headaches.

To decrease pain and inconvenience from sensitive teeth, use a fluoride gel. The fluoride coats the enamel and dentine.

If you have tried most of the aforementioned treatments, but none has helped, consider obtaining a root canal. This treatment includes removing the interior of your tooth pulp or fragile nerve tissue that causes pain or discomfort.
